I just realized when I went to the e.l.f. Cosmetics site to look up both of these highlighters that the Shimmering Facial Whip, the one on the right, has been discontinued. I’m still going to review and compare the two because I know you can still buy the Facial Whip at WalMart and on Amazon.
I bought e.l.f’s new Highlighting Pearl Paint in the shade Moonbeam for $4.00. This was my first experience with a liquid highlighter. I use e.l.f.’s stick highlighters all the time so I thought I might like the liquid just as much. I did…and I didn’t. This highlighter does give a powerful shine. You can apply it lightly for just a subtle glow, which is what I do, or you can paint it on to blind everyone. It does have a good bit of glitter in it that is noticeable on the skin. This could be a good or bad thing depending on what you like. The tricky thing with this highlighter is it has a pretty tacky texture. It does dry down on the skin quickly so you need to work fairly fast. However, if you do ANYTHING other than lightly tapping this into the skin it will wipe your makeup off. It’s very important to just lightly tap it, do NOT rub it, or you will destroy your makeup. I speak from experience.
*I’m wearing the Highlighting Pearl Paint in the left picture, click to see it better. Right picture the Highlighting Pearl Paint is swatched on the left and the Shimmering Facial Whip on the right, basically identical.
When I saw the Highlighting Pearl Paint I thought that it looked very similar to the Shimmering Facial Whip in the shade Spotlight that only costed $1.00. I had never tried the Facial Whips so I decided to order it at the same time to compare. When you swatch both of the highlighters they look basically identical. However, on the face they are TOTALLY different. They still look like glowy, glittery highlights on the face but the Shimmering Facial Whip is weirdly liquidy. When you squeeze the tube a water like substance comes out before any of the highlight will. I’ve tried shaking up the tube and it doesn’t help. This highlight pulled the makeup straight off of my face, which is why I don’t have a picture of me wearing it. The formula for the Facial Whip is just inferior to the Highlighting Pearl Paint so I say pay the extra $3.00 and get something that will work.
I definitely do not recommend the Shimmering Facial Whip and I’m not sure I recommend the Highlighting Pearl Paint either. The Pearl Paint can look beautiful on the skin but you’re going to have to spend some time working with it to get it that way and to keep it from ruining your makeup. Any of the stick highlighters give just as beautiful of a glow with much less work. I’d love to know if you’ve tried either of these or thought about trying them and what your thoughts are! Thanks for reading and have a great day!
