I wouldn’t say that Belladonna by Adalyn Grace is a favorite book of mine but I was interested in the story enough to read the sequel, Foxglove. Both of these books have stunning covers but unfortunately, they’re just pretty bookshelf décor because the stories within them are so bland. This review will have spoilers.
Synopsis:
The captivating sequel to the Gothic-infused Belladonna, in which Signa and Death face a supernatural foe determined to tear them apart.
A duke has been murdered. The lord of Thorn Grove has been framed. And Fate, the elusive brother of Death, has taken up residence in a sumptuous estate nearby. He’s hellbent on revenge after Death took the life of the woman he loved many years ago…and now he’s determined to have Signa for himself, no matter the cost.
Signa and her cousin Blythe are certain that Fate can save Elijah Hawthorne from prison if they will entertain his presence. But the more time the girls spend with Fate, the more frightening their reality becomes as Signa exhibits dramatic new powers that link her to Fate’s past. With mysteries and danger around every corner, the cousins must decide if they can trust one another as they navigate their futures in high society, unravel the murders that haunt their family, and play Fate’s unexpected games—all with their destinies hanging in the balance.
Dangerous, suspenseful, and seductive, this sequel to Signa and Death’s story is as utterly romantic as it is perfectly deadly.
My Thoughts:
- Rating-
Foxglove’s biggest crime is how boring it is. It’s over 400 pages of a pure snooze fest. The idea of Death and Fate being brothers and actual sentient beings is SO cool. I spent this entire book wanting more of their backstory. Do they have parents? Were they born or have they always existed? Are there more immortal beings like them? If you’re like me and wanting the answers to any of those questions, prepare to be disappointed.
What you’re going to get is two immortal brothers fighting over one super sPeCiAl girl. Stefan, Damon and Elena from The Vampire Diaries kept coming to mind but with less drama or fun. The “love triangle” never worked and we, as the reader, know it’s never going to work because Fate puts no effort into winning Signa and she clearly doesn’t like him. This book would have been so much more interesting if there would have been an actual love triangle or some real drama of any kind.
I also was not into the murder plot. Mysteries have never been my thing so I wasn’t a huge fan of the murder plot in Belladonna and I definitely didn’t enjoy reading another one. The story in general just wasn’t fun to read. I said in my review of Belladonna that it was very YA and honestly, Foxglove reads more like middle grade. There were moments of adult content but they were kind of jarring because the rest of the story seemed more for younger readers.
Final Thoughts:
I’m giving this book two stars instead of one because it’s not the worst thing I’ve read and I do believe some people will enjoy it. However, I’m done with this series. I’d love to know if you plan to read it or what you think. Thanks for reading and have a great day!
