I have read one other book by Rebecca F. Kenney, A Court of Sugar and Spice. I thought it was a fun, but cringe, read and while I didn’t absolutely hate it, I wasn’t super excited to read anything else by her. However, I stumbled across The Horseman of Sleepy Hollow and decided to give it a try because it sounded like a perfect fall read. I am SO glad that I did because this novella was excellent! It is the seventh in The Immortal Warriors series but it can be read as a standalone. This review will be spoiler free.
I like to give a heat level rating for all books with romance. If you’re curious about my rating system, you can check it out here.
Synopsis:
Pressured to choose a husband, Katrina Van Tassel inadvertently creates a crisis moment between suitors Brom Brunt & Ichabod Crane. The bloody aftermath leaves her wounded & abandoned on the Old Church Bridge, helpless to the oncoming Headless Horseman. This steamy romantic version of Washington Irving’s original tale incorporates a sassy Katrina, the Celtic myth of the dullahan (headless riders), and some beloved romance tropes to create a novella you’ll want to read annually around Halloween!
My Thoughts:
- Rating- ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Heat Level-
Since this is a novella, I’m going to keep this review pretty short and spoiler free. If you enjoy historical settings with headstrong heroines and cinnamon roll heroes, you need to read this. I truly enjoyed every aspect of it. I’ve always loved the legend of the Headless Horseman. In this story, Kenney takes it and creates something new and very romantic.
However, if you’ve read some of her other books, you’ll know that they usually feature a heavy amount of spice. This one leans more toward the sweet and fluffy side. There are no graphic sexual scenes and most things are alluded to or fade to black. This could be a good or bad thing depending on your preferences but I didn’t feel the romance was lacking in any way.
I also really liked all of the characters. I suppose my only complaint would be that since this is a novella, the characters weren’t as fleshed out as they could have been in an actual novel. The story was so good that I wish it would have been longer but it still works well in this more condensed form.
Final Thoughts:
I’m glad that I gave Rebecca F. Kenney another chance and my enjoyment of this novella has made me want to read more from her. If you have any favorites, please let me know! Thanks for reading!
