One of my favorite brands for unique lip products is Haunting Hues Cosmetics. They do offer other things, but I primarily enjoy the lippies. As far as indie brands go, they tend to be more affordable and the quality is typically really good. I purchased a few things from them awhile back, including one of their contour powders, and I’m finally done testing it all out. I’ll talk about the contour powder first and then get into all the lip products!
The Casket Contour Powders are $15.00 for 6 grams of product and are packaged in a plastic container with a sifter. I bought the shade Putrefaction, which is described as a soft pale lavender gray. I knew that this shade wouldn’t work as a contour for me but it’s described as being semi translucent with the ability to be built up. I thought it could possibly work as a light blush or to cool down warm toned blushes. I technically can use it in that way but I have to be very, very careful. This powder is MUCH more pigmented than I assumed it would be. It’s also more gray toned than lavender which gave me a very corpse -esque look. I won’t complain about the color because it is described as a lavender gray and that can work with certain looks, but I am disappointed with how pigmented and difficult to blend out it is. I don’t see myself using this often and I only recommend it if you’re sure you’d like this color/formula.
I bought two of their lip balm products. The first, and my favorite, is the Batty Balm in The Count. This balm is $10.00 and packaged in a glass pot with a screw on lid. The Count, the color I chose, is described as being a sheer violet black with a touch of gray. On my lips, it looks like a beautiful deep mauve. It’s very comfortable and leaves a long wearing stain behind. I think of everything I bought, this is my favorite. There are a few other shades available and I would like to buy more in the future.
The other balm I purchased was the Lip and Cheek Tint in Olive. This one is $8.00 and is described as being a yellow brown based green with a warm undertone. Unfortunately, on my lips, it just doesn’t show up. No matter how many times I applied it, I could only see a faint sheen of olive color. In the picture above, I’m wearing it underneath their gloss in Glow in the Fog and the two do pair beautifully together. Overall, this isn’t a lippie I would wear alone but I do enjoy it paired with other products.
Last but not least is the two glosses and lip cream. I bought one shade of the Eye and Lip Cream in Lust for Me, a black base with crimson red shimmer. It’s $9.50 and packaged in a very large tube with an equally large doe foot. This was a total miss. The large doe foot makes it almost impossible to get a precise application. With a more sheer color, this wouldn’t be as much of an issue but with something this dark and pigmented, it’s just a mess. The formula was also very bad. It ran into my lip lines immediately, smeared on to my teeth and had an overall slippery, oily feel. With a black based color, I want a formula that’s going to stay in place. This can also be used on the eyes and I can NOT even imagine how much of a disaster that would be🙃 Everything about this except for the color was awful.
Thankfully, I enjoyed the two glosses I bought much more, even though they have the same awful packaging. Both are $9.00. Glow in the Fog is a cool toned gray brown with green shimmer and Ghost Ship is a gray blue with red pink shimmer. Glow in the Fog is more sheer and Ghost Ship is more pigmented, but both can be sheered out or built up. They have a very comfortable and long wearing formula but aren’t sticky. I really loved both of these paired with my Nomad Cosmetics Ghost Town USA Eyeshadow Palette so if you own that palette and want lip products to go with it, these are great options. I will definitely be buying more glosses in the future but avoiding the lip and eye creams.
Final Thoughts:
Even though there were a couple of misses here, Haunting Hues is still a unique indie brand that I enjoy supporting. There are not many reviews for their products out there so if there’s anything from the brand you’d like to see reviewed, let me know. Thanks for reading🖤
