Yesterday I compared some soaps so I thought today we would stay on the hygiene roll and talk about some different deodorants. I have three different ones that I have tried and/or bought repeatedly. They are Arm & Hammer Essentials Fresh Scent, Arm & Hammer Essentials Unscented and Tom’s of Maine Fresh Apricot Scent. I bought all three of these from Wal-Mart but I have linked to the actual company web site for each product. I paid a little less than $2.00 for each of the Arm & Hammer ones and I paid $5.00 for the Tom’s of Maine.
When you’re comparing ingredients Tom’s of Maine deodorant is superior in every way. They are cruelty free and use no animal by-products. They are free of: parabens, phthalates, artificial colors, artificial fragrances, preservatives, gluten and they offer deodorant options for aluminum free or with aluminum. My deodorant is aluminum free. I tried out the Fresh Apricot scent and it smells great. The texture is a solid gel, if that makes sense. It’s not a solid white powder deodorant or a runny liquid gel. It goes on wet feeling but that does dry quickly. I wanted to love this deodorant so much. It’s so much more natural, the price wasn’t awful and it smelled good but I really didn’t like it. I knew I would feel sweatier because it is aluminum free and aluminum is what controls wetness. However, this did not control body odor at all! I had to reapply this around three times in one day and I’m not a very sweaty person or someone that struggles with body odor. I’m also not really active so I didn’t expect this to wear off so fast. This was a negative for me but it may work for you. I think it just depends on your body.
Next on my deodorant adventure I bought the Arm & Hammer Essentials Fresh Scent. This deodorant is free of: aluminum, parabens, artificial colors and animal by-products. As far as I know they are also cruelty free but it does not say that on the deodorant tube. I really liked this one. The scent is not mild but not strong either and it does smell just very fresh. I believe a man or woman would be comfortable with the scent. The texture was a solid gel. I feel like it helped keep me dry, even though it’s aluminum free, and I had no body odor after just one application. The only complaint I have is at times it will irritate the skin on my armpits, especially if I just shaved them. It’s nothing serious just a slight burning sensation. Overall, this is a really good more natural drugstore choice. It’s not totally natural but for a price tag of less than $2.00 I’ll use it.
The last deodorant I’ve tried and what I’m currently using is the Arm & Hammer Essentials Unscented. It is free of the same things that the previous Arm & Hammer one was and the texture is also a solid gel. I like this one as much as the Fresh scent if not more. I’ve noticed that I do not have any burning with this deodorant so I assume the scent in the other one is what was irritating my skin. It works just as well. I have little wetness and no body odor. My only complaint is this is NOT unscented like it claims. It smells like lemons. I like the smell but if you want a true unscented deodorant this would not be for you. Again, this is not the most natural choice in the world but if you need a cheaper deodorant from the drugstore I would give this a try.
To rank the three, the Arm & Hammer Essentials Unscented is the best, in my opinion, with Tom’s of Maine coming in last. I’m going to keep using the Arm & Hammer until I come across another natural brand I’d like to try. The thing with deodorant is it’s something you NEED to work. You don’t want to wear a new kind out and it fail you so I’m not too eager to try something new haha. Anyways I hope this was helpful! Thanks for reading and have a Merry Christmas!
