What better way to start the spring season than with one of the trippiest stories ever written? I’m ashamed to say that until now I had never read “Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass” by Lewis Carroll. Alice in Wonderland, the children’s movie, was and is one of my all time favorite movies and I loved the book just as much.

If you’ve never seen Alice in Wonderland or read the book it begins with a young girl named Alice Liddell. Alice is outside with her older sister enjoying the summer day when she happens to see a white rabbit with a pocket watch and waistcoat run by her. Realizing that it is highly unusual for a rabbit to have a pocket watch and waistcoat she decides to follow him down a rabbit hole to Wonderland. From there she meets all kinds of curious characters such as: a Cheshire Cat who can disappear at will, a Mad Hatter, the March Hare, talking flowers, a wise caterpillar and a crazy queen. She has many grand adventures until she wakes up back at home. Wonderland and all of it’s inhabitants were all just a dream that Alice had while sleeping.

I love the way this story is told. The way it’s written feels like you are in the dream as well. Characters appear and disappear at random, the setting will change without warning and strange events will happen that seem normal in the context of a dream. This is a beautiful, innocent and fantastical story that I can not recommend enough. Let me know what you think of little Alice’s adventures in Wonderland!
