*This book was sent to me for review purposes by the author. As always, all opinions are my own.

The Sea Was a Fair Master is a collection of twenty three short stories. The book is by Calvin Demmer who was kind enough to send me a pre-release copy. The stories include some pretty interesting characters, such as: aliens, robots, sea creatures, children with chilling abilities and just all kinds of cool and creepy things. I really, really enjoyed the stories but I’ll get into my thoughts after the synopsis. This review will be spoiler free.

The world’s fate lies with a comatose young girl; an android wants to remember a human she once knew under Martian skies; men at sea learn that the ocean is a realm far different from land, where an unforgiving god rules; a school security guard discovers extreme English class; and a man understands what the behemoth beneath the sea commands of him.
The Sea Was a Fair Master is a collection of 23 stories, riding the currents of fantasy, science fiction, crime, and horror. There are tales of murder, death, loss, revenge, greed, and hate. There are also tales of hope, survival, and love.
For the sea was a fair master.

My Thoughts

I found all of the stories to be well written and unique. This book really put me in mind of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, but for adults. A few notable favorites to me were: “The Blind Teddy”, “The One”, “Underneath” and “Voodoo Child”. Some of the stories were so twisted that I couldn’t help but laugh, especially the way the endings were written. This book definitely mixes macabre topics with humor.

If you are a horror fan I really think you’ll enjoy these stories. A lot of them I felt could even be fleshed out into full books on their own. This book will be available on June 5th or can be pre-ordered now from Amazon for just $3.00. It is well worth that price. If you would like to learn more about Calvin Demmer I’m going to link to his website, Goodreads and twitter below. He is an author I look forward to reading more from.
