PC Video Game Review- Dark Parables: The Curse of Briar Rose

Dp11

I mentioned last month in my December Wrap Up post that starting in 2019 I would be doing a video game review once a month with a makeup look inspired by that game. This gives me the chance to be creative and combine two major passions of mine. I primarily play PC games but I do plan to include some from the Xbox One eventually. I’m not very tech savvy so while I will mention the game system requirements, I probably won’t be able to answer any tech questions. This also isn’t a walkthrough, only a review. My goal is to post these the last Friday of every month. Now onto the actual review!

Game Series Information

Dark Parables is a series of PC video games that currently includes fifteen separate games, there will be more in the future. The games were originally created by a company called Blue Tea Games but later games were created by another company, Eipix. All fifteen games have a common theme, reimagined fairy tales with a dark twist. They are each connected in some way and each one builds on the previous which makes for a huge, dynamic universe. These games are more adult versions of childhood fairy tales but they are pretty tame and would be suitable, in my opinion, for preteens and up. All of the games are what is considered a “point and click adventure.” They also contain mini games and hidden/fragmented object scenes. For today, I’m obviously going to be reviewing the first game in the series, Dark Parables: The Curse of Briar Rose.

Game System Requirements

  • OS: Windows XP/Vista/7/8
  • CPU: 800 Mhz
  • RAM: 1280 MB
  • DirectX: 9.0
  • Hard Drive: 257 MB

Review

The Curse of Briar Rose was released in 2010 and can currently be purchased from Big Fish Games. There are two versions of the game available, the Collector’s Edition for $20.00 or the original for $10.00. I recommend the Collector’s Edition because it includes a bonus mini game, artwork, downloadable music and other extras. This is an older game and by far the clunkiest of the series, but still very enjoyable to play. It’s filled with gorgeous, but eery, scenery (a common theme in the Dark Parables universe), amazing music and an intriguing storyline. If you couldn’t tell by the title, this game is based off the story of Sleeping Beauty, also known as Little Briar Rose, by author Charles Perrault. The game stays pretty true to the original tale of Sleeping Beauty but there are some added twists that I won’t spoil. I’ve replayed this game multiple times because I enjoy it that much. If you grew up loving fairy tales and want to experience that again but on a more mature level than I think you would really love this game.

Makeup Look

I wanted to create a makeup look using similar colors to the primary color palette used in the game. I decided to use my Coastal Scents Jungle Roar palette, which I have not reviewed yet. I’m honestly not sure I would recommend this palette. I haven’t used it much but the eyeshadows just weren’t the easiest to work with and they made my eyes water terribly. Regardless, I was able to create the look I wanted and I feel it goes along with the blue, green and gray vibes that are prevalent throughout the game. On my lips is the NYX Suede Matte Lipstick in Moonwalk.

I hope you all enjoyed my first video game review! Feel free to suggest ways that I can improve these reviews and just give me feedback in general. I’d also love to know if you think you’d enjoy this game! Thanks for reading and have a great day!
